Mexican authorities have approved an application for a drug designed to combat the global spread of the deadly sexually transmitted diseases, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.
The agency is currently seeking the approval of a single dose of the drug, known as "Honeymoon Viagra," for the treatment of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in the San Pedro de Zavala area, officials said.
The drug, which has been in use since the early 2000s, has been linked to the deaths of three gay men in San Pedro, some of whom died after taking the drug during a sexual encounter, officials said.
The FDA said it was working on plans to evaluate and approve the drug, and the agency is working on a clinical trial, the agency said.
Health officials said the use of the drug is "well-coordinated and safe" and that there are no known negative side effects from the drug.
The agency said it will continue to work with San Pedro, where one of the cases of the sexually transmitted diseases has been identified, to determine if the drug would be effective against the disease.
"This is a critical area of action, so we would advise the public to seek advice from a medical professional," said San Pedro Health Director, David Zavala.
He said he did not know if any of the men who died had been given Viagra or had been using the drug. San Pedro Health Director, Victoriano Soto, said the drug would be approved if it is effective against the disease, which can cause pain, nausea and fatigue.
"This drug is being used as a treatment for chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. It is not indicated for those who are sexually active. It is not recommended for those who have a weak immune system or have a history of allergic reactions," he said.
The FDA said the drug will only be approved for use in adults and older women.
The agency is evaluating the use of the drug and has already received approval from the FDA for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and infections.
"The FDA is working on a clinical trial," Zavala said.
The FDA will consider the approval of the drug Thursday.The agency will have to submit a report to the FDA for approval, Zavala said, but he stressed that the FDA is still reviewing the drug, so it will decide whether to continue the trial, the FDA said.
The FDA said the drug is not currently recommended for use in people who have not received the drug or who have had an allergic reaction to it or to its components.
"The FDA's review of this product is a matter for the agency and the public to decide," he said.
A spokesman for San Pedro Health said the drug is being used as a treatment for gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis.
"Our hope is that the FDA's review will determine whether or not the drug is safe and effective for use in this population, and therefore, we will continue to work with San Pedro Health and its partners in San Pedro to seek the approval of this drug," said Dr. David Zavala.
